Here are the top self-care and wellness influencers on TikTok

Spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers are increasingly focused on self-care when it comes to their health.  This is a shift that’s evident in the business strategies of several major pharma companies, notably Johnson & Johnson’s recent decision to spin off their consumer health care units with products in the wellness space. Social media influencers have played a role in sculpting the idea of self-care, whether it comes to body image, skincare routines or diet and nutrition.  Like the growing number of physicians and supposed mental health experts on TikTok, there are plenty of content creators on the platform who tout themselves as proponents of self-care. These users aim to…

What Happens if Your Medical Records Are Incomplete?

Your entire medical journey lives in digital health records, but how do you know if those records are wrong, incomplete or missing important information? That’s the focus of research done by Varadraj Gurupur, associate professor in UCF’s School of Global Health Management and Informatics. His latest project created an algorithm that can predict and measure the incompleteness of electronic health records — in everything from your lab results to disease diagnoses, medical history to prescription records. Missing information in the electronic health records (EHR) that hospitals and doctor’s offices keep is like a leaking pipe, he says. If you don’t know where the leak is, you can’t fix it, and soon the…

In the United States, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15.  During this time, we recognize the histories, cultures, customs, diversity and food of the Hispanic culture.  If you are not Hispanic, you might not be able to notice the differences in the food, but if you live in Miami, you are most certainly an expert. This refreshing citrus recipe is a healthy food option to bring to the beach or consume on a pool day. It is easy to make ahead of time, and even tastes better when left marinating overnight. Shrimp is high in protein and low in fat, and because all the ingredients…

Health care will get even more dysfunctional after January 1

Doctors across the country, especially those in primary care, have been up in arms about Medicare’s proposed cuts in reimbursement that are scheduled to go into effect on January 1. They are concerned — rightfully so — that these cuts will be ruinous to their practices and compromise the care they can provide to their patients. As an emergency physician, I worry about the cuts for a different reason: emergency departments might soon be filled with more and more people who can’t access primary care. In a recent commentary in the Washington Post, Shirlene Obuobi, a physician in Chicago, wrote about why patients no longer feel cared for by their…

How to make New Year’s resolutions you can actually keep

It’s that time of year again — when seemingly every advertisement, social media post, or well-meaning loved one is quick to remind you how you’re due for a refresh, a restart, a rebrand. Self-improvement is difficult any time of year, but you may feel extra pressure to embark on a life change at the top of the new year. The desire to set goals often comes on the heels of the start of a new week, month, year, semester, or birthday, dubbed the “fresh start effect.” When the slate is wiped clean in any capacity, people feel more compelled to conquer a challenge. New Year’s resolutions get a bad rap…

How Street Medicine Teams Are Tackling the Unhoused Health Care Crisis

Burdened by disproportionate rates of substance use disorders, mental health disorders and chronic disease, people experiencing homelessness are some of the state’s neediest patients, but few receive anything more than emergency services. Barriers like lack of transportation and cumbersome insurance rules keep most from getting regular health care. Instead, they drift through the emergency room during a crisis, racking up high costs to the system (PDF) and deteriorating physically in the interim. Delivering health care this way is costly and not particularly effective for the patient or the system. More than half of the state’s $133 billion Medi-Cal budget is spent on the top 5% of high-needs users (PDF), according…

More breast cancer patients can choose smaller surgery – Health – Life & Style

In recent years, more patients with multiple tumors have been identified, a result of more sensitive imaging techniques that can reveal tiny, once-hidden cancers. That means more patients are being diagnosed with multiple cancer sites in the same breast. In the past, doctors would say these women needed mastectomies. Researchers wanted to know: Was this dogma still true? They followed nearly 200 women with two or three tumors in one breast who had lumpectomies followed by radiation. The patients ranged in age from 40 to 87. To take part in the study, their tumors had to be less than 5 centimeters and separated by 2 to 3 centimeters of…

Southwestern Vermont Health Care moves to join Dartmouth network

The affiliation would give the smaller network access to a shared electronic medical record platform and joint purchasing, among other benefits, it says. File photo by Glenn Russell/VTDigger Dartmouth Health network’s already large influence in the Vermont health care market is likely to grow next year with the addition of Southwestern Vermont Health Care. The board of trustees of the smaller network, which includes a hospital in Bennington and medical clinics in Manchester, Pownal and Wilmington, approved an “integration agreement” in late November that would allow it to become a member of Dartmouth Health, according to an email to staff from SVHC’s president and chief operating officer first reported by…
