Dietitian Explains Health Benefits and Foods to Try

A new study is shedding light on the health benefits of the Atlantic diet. Like the Mediterranean diet, this style of eating is based on the dietary patterns of people living in a specific region of Europe, but this one hones in on northwest Spain and northern Portugal. These populations have some of the lowest incidences of heart disease. The most recent study in JAMA Network found that those who followed the Atlantic diet for a 6-month period had a lower risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a group of condition that increase risk of heart disease and diabetes. While this research is promising, the Atlantic diet is not that well-known. But…

Kelp is trending in the wellness industry — and for good reason. Filled with nutrients that include iron, vitamin K, iodine, calcium and other essential vitamins, this nutrient-dense brown algae is quickly coming into focus for those who are trying to bolster a holistically healthy diet. It is also considered a climate-conscious food by industry regulators, which is being used to help absorb carbon in our environment and help make our oceans healthier and less acidic. In raising and harvesting kelp forests, manufacturers may help to clean up the ocean environments they work in, making it a safer place for fish, too. We spoke to experts in food and health…

What Is a Kosher Diet and Does It Have Health Benefits?

Kosher foods may be a staple in the diets of Jews, but they’re not the only ones eating these products. Over 12 million people in the United States choose kosher foods when shopping at the grocery store, according to Orthodox Union, a kosher certification agency. It’s a huge industry — these products generate over $12 billion in annual sales. These numbers are surprising when you consider that fewer than five million American adults identify as Jewish, according to a report from Brandeis University (PDF). And even fewer are observant and keep kosher. What gives? “Some consumers perceive the products to be cleaner or more wholesome,” says Mindy Haar, PhD, RD, chair of interdisciplinary…

Muscle health can often tell you how you are going to age and stay active and independent as you may move easily and maintain your body robust with healthy muscles but starting at age 40, adults can lose up to 8 percent of their muscle mass per decade. Muscle loss happens not only due to ageing but also due to injury, illness, poor nutrition etc and has implications on daily life activities since decreases in muscle function is largely due to changes in muscle mass. The progressive mismatch between muscle mass and strength mostly occurs due to a deterioration of muscle quality. Hence, muscle strength becomes more important than muscle…

Biden urges veterans to apply for PACT Act’s expanded health care benefits

At the Delaware National Guard facility named for his late son, a somber President Biden on Friday urged veterans to take advantage of new health care opportunities under legislation he signed in August.  The law, known as the PACT Act, helps veterans get screened for exposure to toxins. Those include Agent Orange, which was used for deforestation during the Vietnam War, and burn pits, where trash was destroyed on military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan.  TOPSHOT – US President Joe Biden speaks with Ray Firmani, a 101-year-old World War II veteran, during a town hall with veterans and veteran survivors in New Castle, Delaware, on December 16, 2022.
