Report: Minnesota health care workers leaving at ‘crisis rates’

In 2022 Minnesota nursing homes reported staffing shortages that were worse than anywhere else in the country. The ability to find direct care workers for these institutions and others has become a crisis. That’s according to a new report from the University of Minnesota.  “The crisis of low-wage healthcare workers is a crisis for all those that require care,” report authors wrote.  While direct care work can be incredibly dangerous, it is not paid well. According to the report, over 40 percent of direct care workers in Minnesota earn below 200 percent of the federal poverty line and nearly half use Medicaid or Medicare for insurance. That’s for frontline work…

Here are the ‘5 pillars of a longevity diet’

There are some daily practices that may increase your chances of living to 90 and beyond – and a healthy diet is one of the most important factors on the list. In his new book, “The Blue Zones American Kitchen: 100 Recipes to Live to 100,” Dan Buettner “identified the world’s longest-lived areas (blue zones) and studied the patterns and lifestyles that seem to explain their populations’ longevity.” Blue zones are defined by Buettner as populations with the highest rates of living to 100 – or becoming centenarians – and the highest middle-age life expectancies.  Across the world, these groups include communities in Japan, Italy, Greece, Costa Rica and even…

How a dangerous stew of air pollution is choking the United States

In September 2020, the skies in Oregon turned crimson as dozens of wildfires scorched forests in the Cascade Mountains. In just three days, the blazes engulfed nearly 4,000 square kilometres — more than had burnt in Oregon during the previous 36 years combined. For two weeks, the acrid air held residents hostage in their homes. The Oregon Health Authority documented a 38% increase in respiratory-related visits to hospital emergency departments during September 2020, compared with the previous month. It was “the worst two-week period I’ve ever experienced for air pollution anywhere — including India, China and Bangladesh”, says Perry Hystad at Oregon State University in Corvallis, who studies the health…

Minnesota town drops Texas-style anti-abortion lawsuit plan | Health

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota town has backed away from a proposal to let people sue abortion providers, including organizations that provide abortion drugs by mail, after the state’s attorney general warned that the plan was unconstitutional. The retiring state lawmaker behind the proposal said Monday that he’s not giving up despite the unanimous vote by the Prinsburg City Council on Friday to drop the idea. It’s similar to a Texas law that deputizes private citizens to sue abortion providers or anyone who helps someone get an abortion. Republican Rep. Tim Miller told The Associated Press that he still thinks the proposal is constitutional despite what Democratic Attorney General Keith…

Science Reveals 3 Keys to an Energized, Alert Day | Health & Fitness

TUESDAY, Nov. 6, 2022 (HealthDay News) — Advertising would have you believe that a big bowl of sugary cereal or a syrupy iced coffee drink will make you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in the morning. But that sort of sugar-laden breakfast may be one of the worst things you can do to help you wake up alert and refreshed. A major new sleep study shows a breakfast rich in complex carbohydrates — think a big bowl of steel-cut oatmeal, with some strawberries for flavor — is key to waking up without feeling sluggish. “We found that when you have spike in your blood glucose after breakfast, you’re going to feel less…

Amid ongoing shortage of health care workers, Hawaii hospitals see ‘unprecedented’ demand

WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hospitals across the state are busier than ever — even busier than during the peak of the pandemic. At Maui Memorial Medical Center, patients are having to double up in rooms and even sleep in the emergency room as they wait for a room. “We are experiencing an unprecedented demand for health care. The entire state is,” said Maui Health System Chief Executive Officer Michael Rembis. “This is the highest number of admissions in the state of Hawaii we’ve ever had, and Maui is feeling it.” Health care officials say the capacity issues are being driven by a number of issues. “One of them is that there…

6 Reasons You’re Having Trouble Losing Weight

Unlike what social media influencers would have you believe, the vast majority of people who lose weight don’t maintain it for longer than a year.
