Healthy plant-based diet may lower risk by 19%
Share on PinterestChoosing more healthy plant-based food sources could help reduce the risk of sleep apnea, research suggests. Sophia Hsin/Stocksy Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep-related breathing disorder that has been linked directly to cardiovascular issues, and indirectly to cancer, diabetes, and dementia due to loss of healthy sleep. A new study finds that eating a healthy plant-based diet can significantly reduce the risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea. The study also indicates that consuming an unhealthy plant-based diet heavy in refined grains, sugar, and salt, as well as too many animal-based foods, significantly raises the chances of developing obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs at a time…

DASH diet linked to 10% lower risk
Share on PinterestNew research adds to the evidence in favor of the DASH diet’s cardiovascular benefits. Image credit: Ivan Gener/Stocksy. Prevalence of cardiovascular disease is rising due to changing lifestyles, an aging population, and better survival rates for heart attacks and strokes. There is growing evidence that diet is key to a person’s risk of developing heart and circulatory diseases. Now, a study has found that switching to a healthier diet, such as the DASH diet or a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, might reduce that risk by as much as 10%. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), heart and circulatory diseases now cause one in three deaths…

Following a Healthy Diet Can Lowers the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease by 10 Percent
A healthy diet is important for many reasons, including preventing cardiovascular disease. Previous research has shown that those who eat healthily can help to prevent obesity and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Now, a new study suggests that a healthy diet can also lower the risk of cardiovascular disease by 10 percent. In this new study, researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) compared the effects of three eating patterns against the risk of experiencing a cardiovascular event within the next ten years. The three diets consisted of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables,…

Why doctors don’t openly defy abortion laws, even when patients are at risk : Shots
American Medical Association President Dr. Jack Resneck recently recounted how doctors around the country are facing difficulties practicing medicine in states that ban abortion. Nicole Xu for NPR hide caption toggle caption Nicole Xu for NPR American Medical Association President Dr. Jack Resneck recently recounted how doctors around the country are facing difficulties practicing medicine in states that ban abortion. Nicole Xu for NPR Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, 13 states have banned abortion except in the case of a medical emergency or serious health risk for the pregnant patient. But deciding what cases qualify for a medical exception can be a difficult judgement call for doctors. News reports…

Study links air pollution to higher risk of stroke and related death
Share on PinterestAccording to a long-term study, air pollution increases the risk of having a first stroke, additional strokes, and death. Fairfax Media Archives/Getty Images A new study tracked the effect of air pollution on the risk of having a first and subsequent stroke and of dying from resulting cardiovascular issues. Researchers tracked the health records of a large number of people and their exposure to air pollutants. The study focuses on PM 2.5 pollution, tiny air particles that are hazardous to human health. New research from the Sun Yat-sen University School of Public Health in Guangzhou, China, amplifies how air pollution could affect the trajectory of health from stroke…

COVID Appears to Raise Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease | Health & Fitness
FRIDAY, Sept. 16, 2022 (HealthDay News) — COVID-19 infection may significantly boost an older person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a new, large-scale study suggests. People 65 and older who contracted COVID were nearly 70% more likely overall to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s within a year of their infection, researchers report. The elderly fared even worse, with the risk of Alzheimer’s doubling in COVID patients who were over 85, researchers found. “We found the highest risk increase was observed in people older than 85 years old, and also women,” said senior researcher Rong Xu, a professor of biomedical informatics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. Research Examines Effects of Embryonic Exposure to Environmental Pollutants on Risk of Diabetes : UMass Amherst
AMHERST, Mass. – A University of Massachusetts Amherst environmental health scientist has received a $2.44 million, five-year grant renewal from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue her research into how embryonic exposure to certain common pollutants may put people at risk for diabetes and other metabolic health conditions later in life. Image UMass Amherst associate professor Alicia Timme-Laragy Alicia Timme-Laragy, associate professor in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences, examines the impact on the developing pancreas of early life-stage exposures to two common per and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) chemicals, found in waterproof and nonstick household products, and the PFAS-containing aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), used to fight flammable-liquid…
