Why St. Luke’s made its own HMO-style insurance plan for Idaho

As it grew, St. Luke’s executives described a master plan to curb the costs of health care — and to ensure that care actually makes people healthier. One milestone in that plan arrived last fall: a new insurance company called St. Luke’s Health Plan. “The thing that really is going to be different with our own health plan: you will have an integrated experience,” said St. Luke’s Health Plan President Matt Wolff. “I think that’s a major hurdle that causes a lot of friction, a lot of…

Minnesota town drops Texas-style anti-abortion lawsuit plan | Health

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota town has backed away from a proposal to let people sue abortion providers, including organizations that provide abortion drugs by mail, after the state’s attorney general warned that the plan was unconstitutional. The retiring state lawmaker behind the proposal said Monday that he’s not giving up despite the unanimous vote by the Prinsburg City Council on Friday to drop the idea. It’s similar to a Texas law that deputizes private citizens to sue abortion providers or anyone who helps someone get an abortion. Republican Rep. Tim Miller told The Associated Press that he still thinks the proposal is constitutional despite what Democratic Attorney General Keith…

Vt. officials float plan to privatize state retirees’ health care

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Retired state employees could be getting a new private health care plan but the union representing them is sounding the alarm. State employee retirees right now have Medicare through the federal government and supplemental health care plans through the Vermont State Employees Union. Those supplemental plans are similar to what current state employees have. But a new plan from the Scott administration would switch some 6,000 retired employees into a private Medicare Advantage plan. “It provides extra benefits that Medicare doesn’t cover. It provides a lot of extras that you wouldn’t get with Medicare,” said Vt. Human Resources Commissioner Beth Fastiggi. She says those benefits include…
