ASN Journals Examine Health Benefits of Plant-Based Diets

Published in 2019, the “Special Report on Climate Change and Land,” commissioned by the United Nations, took a comprehensive look at how land use influences climate change and vice versa.  According to the findings, “Land use—specifically how we grow, get and eat our food—is a major driver of climate change.”  The authors of the report believe, “balanced diets, featuring plant-based foods, such as those based on coarse grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and animal-sourced food produced in resilient, sustainable and low-emission systems, present major opportunities for adaptation and mitigation while generating significant co-benefits in terms of human health.” ASN Journals have been supporting policy makers, public health…

Public health efforts reducing sodium in diets are “warranted” after research links salt intake to premature death

12 Jul 2022 — Consumers who always add salt to their food have a 28% higher risk of dying prematurely compared to those who never – or rarely – add salt, a study has revealed. NutritionInsight speaks to Pombo and the scientists from both studies on the impact of these findings…

Diets high in protein, zinc and vitamin B3 boost heart health, study finds

A Mediterranean-type diet rich in protein, vitamin B3 and zinc can boost heart health, according to a new study. File photo by Africa Studio/Shutterstock May 3 (UPI) — People who consume a Mediterranean-type diet high in nutrients such as protein, zinc and vitamin B3 may see improvements in heart health, a study presented Tuesday found. After one year on a weight-loss program that included personalized exercise plans, as well as nutrition modifications centered around a “low-calorie, high-protein” form of the Mediterranean diet, 72 participants saw 9% reductions in body weight, the researchers said. In addition, their measurements on several key indicators of heart health — including assessments for arterial stiffness,…
