Johnston Community College offers options for an AAS degree and a Career and College
Promise certificate

Debuting at Johnston Community College this year, the Health and Fitness Science (HFS)
program offers graduates the opportunity to launch careers into multiple areas of
the health and fitness science field.

Students will be trained in exercise science and be able to administer basic fitness
tests and health risk appraisals, teach specific exercise and fitness classes, and
provide instruction in the proper use of exercise equipment and facilities.

“The Health & Fitness Science degree is launching at the perfect time! The multibillion-dollar
fitness industry is evolving with interesting business models and new ways to train”
said Lead Heath and Fitness Instructor, Kelly Williams. “Even during these challenging
times for businesses, new fitness facilities like Planet Fitness and Fit24 are establishing
themselves in our community.  Our research shows that Personal Trainers, Athletic
Trainers, Wellness Coaches, and Exercise Physiologists are some of the fastest-growing
fields in Health and Fitness. In fact, a recent LinkedIn Workforce Report stated that
Wellness & Fitness is one of the top three industries that have hiring rates above
pre-COVID levels!”

The HFS program is offered as a 70 credit hour Associate in Applied Science degree
(AAS) and also an 18 credit hour Career and College Promise (CCP) certificate for
high school students who are enrolled in the CCP program. Both the degree and the
certificate have been fully approved through the North Carolina Community College
System and are currently awaiting final approval through JCC’s reginal accreditor,
the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Classes will be taught by Kelly Williams, FT PE/Health Instructor and Rose Dey Carrol,
PT Health and Fitness Instructor. Those interested in this program can learn more
