Ellen Eaton, M.D., associate professor with the University of Alabama at Birmingham Division of Infectious Diseases in the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, has been selected to serve as a National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine (ELHM) Scholar for a three-year term.

Each year, the NAM selects 10 exceptional ELHM scholars to engage around, and learn from, activities under the umbrella of the NAM, addressing topics that are currently shaping the future of health and medicine.

Eaton applied to contribute to NAM priority areas around the opioid crisis and COVID-19.

“My fellowship with the National Academy of Medicine in 2017 was truly career changing, allowing me to work with international leaders in addiction and infectious diseases and ultimately inspiring the 1917 HIV/ Office-based Opioid Treatment Clinic,” Eaton said. “I was elated to be selected again by the National Academy, this time as an Emerging Leader. In this role, I will use my experiences at the bedside and in the lab to improve public health and policy at a national level.”

Eaton’s term began June 1 and will end June 30, 2025.
